Why do Americans say accommodations?

News Discuss
In North American English, accommodations can be a countable noun, when it means hotel rooms, guest houses, short-term rentals and so on. These are places to stay temporarily. Outside North America, we only use it as an uncountable noun. https://sites.google.com/view/andamantrips/accommodations
